Question
Can I use spare diabetes supplies?
Sunny, owner notes“I wish my dog lived as long as I do.”Updated
I'm an owner, not a vet. This is not veterinary advice, so check anything medical with your own vet.
Short answer
If you've been handed spare supplies, or found some in the cupboard, it's sensible to check before using them. Ask your vet to look first. A sealed pack doesn't prove it's safe, the right match, or stored properly. Note the exact name, the expiry date and how it was kept. Never pass medicines on to another owner without your vet's okay.
What to know at home
A sealed pack, a clear expiry date and knowing how it was stored all help. They still don't mean it's okay to use or give away, so let your vet tell you what they can check.
What to write down
- Exact product and unopened packaging
- Expiry and storage history
- Your clinic's instructions
What to ask next
If you're running low, tell the vet early so you can get a proper supply through them, rather than using something you can't be sure of.
