Question

How do I confirm a safe source for prescribed supplies?

Sunny, owner notes“I wish my dog lived as long as I do.”Updated

I'm an owner, not a vet. This is not veterinary advice, so check anything medical with your own vet.

Short answer

Ordering your dog's supplies online can feel risky, so it's sensible to check before you buy. The rules depend on the product, so ask your vet and the pharmacy first. Make sure it's the exact product your vet prescribed, that it stays properly stored on the way, and that the syringes match it. If a seller never asks for a prescription, treat that as a warning sign.

I never give insulin amounts here. Yours comes from your vet's written plan.

What to know at home

If what arrives has a different label, don't guess whether it's the same thing. Ask the pharmacy or your vet before you use it. Order early, so a late delivery doesn't leave you without insulin.

What to write down

  • Exact product and prescription details
  • Seller and delivery arrangements
  • What happens if the item arrives damaged or different

What to ask next

Ask your vet which suppliers they trust. Check the rules for your area yourself, and don't assume a prescription for food also covers medicines.

What if my usual prescribed supplies are unavailable?

Ask your vet or usual pharmacy to confirm the exact item you're prescribed and another reliable place to get it. A photo of the packaging helps when you ask, but it doesn't prove two products are the same.

Check with them that you can keep getting it, how it's delivered and how to store it. Any swap of medicine or device needs your vet's okay first. If you're about to run out, tell the vet today.
