Question

Can fireworks, guests or a house move upset his diabetes?

Sunny, owner notes“I wish my dog lived as long as I do.”Updated

I'm an owner, not a vet. This is not veterinary advice, so check anything medical with your own vet.

Short answer

Big changes at home, like fireworks, a houseful of guests or moving house, can unsettle any dog. Stress can affect appetite and glucose, so keep meals, insulin times and walks as normal as you can. Give him a quiet room to hide in. If he won't eat, is shaking and weak, or seems very unwell, call your vet right away.

I never give insulin amounts here. Yours comes from your vet's written plan.

What to know at home

Diabetic dogs do best with a calm, steady routine. Noise, strangers and new places can make a dog pant, pace or go off his food. Shaking from fear can look like shaking from a low, so watch for weakness, wobbling or confusion too.

What to write down

  • Dates of fireworks, visitors or the move
  • Appetite, sleep and anything unusual in how he acted
  • Whether his meals and injection times stayed the same

What to ask next

If you know a noisy festival or a move is coming, ask your vet ahead about calming options that are safe with diabetes. Don't give calming tablets or human medicine without asking. If he won't eat at insulin time, call your vet before the injection.
