Question
My diabetic dog seems weak or wobbly after a walk
Sunny, owner notes“I wish my dog lived as long as I do.”Updated
I'm an owner, not a vet. This is not veterinary advice, so check anything medical with your own vet.
Short answer
This is an emergency, so stop the walk. If he's weak, wobbly, trembling or not himself after exercise, contact your vet or an emergency clinic straight away, because a hard walk can drop his blood sugar too low. If your vet gave you a written plan for a low, follow it while you get help. If he collapses, go straight in.
I never give insulin amounts here. Yours comes from your vet's written plan.
What you might notice at home
The walk was longer, hotter or more exciting than usual. He slows down, sways, or seems spaced out. Some dogs just look very tired. Even a mild low can look like a dog who doesn't respond when you call him.
Don't finish the walk to see if it passes. And don't try a string of different foods on the way home unless that's what your vet's written plan says.
What to tell the clinic
- What the walk was, and how it differed from usual.
- What he looks like this minute.
- When he last ate, in clock time.
- A glucose reading, if you have one from a meter you trust.
What to do next time, after he is safe
Ask your vet how long a walk is OK and which signs mean you should stop. Write their answer down and keep it with his notes.
My dog is shaking, wobbly or weak after insulin.
This is an emergency. Weakness, wobbliness, trembling or odd behaviour after insulin can mean dangerously low blood sugar. Call a vet or emergency clinic straight away, whether or not your dog has just been on a walk.
Follow the emergency plan your vet gave you while you arrange care. If you can get a reading quickly, pass it on, but don't hold off getting help to do a test. If your dog collapses, has a seizure or is barely responding, get emergency care straight away.
