Question

What should I keep ready in case my dog goes low?

Sunny, owner notes“I wish my dog lived as long as I do.”Updated

I'm an owner, not a vet. This is not veterinary advice, so check anything medical with your own vet.

Short answer

It's much easier to stay calm in a low if you've planned it on a good day. Ask your vet to show you what to give, how to give it, and where to go after. Keep that written down with the vet and emergency clinic numbers. If your dog is weak, shaky, wobbly or has a seizure, call your vet or emergency clinic now.

I never give insulin amounts here. Yours comes from your vet's written plan.

What to know at home

Most vets suggest keeping something sugary they've approved in the house and in your walking bag. Never pour liquid into the mouth of a dog who can't swallow properly.

What to write down

  • The vet's low-sugar plan, in their words
  • Vet and emergency clinic numbers, and the route at night
  • His insulin name, food and last injection time, ready to read out

What to ask next

Make one card for the fridge and one for your bag, and show everyone who looks after him. Check the plan at each check-up. In a low, follow your vet's plan and get him seen straight away, even if he seems better.
