Question
There's no emergency vet nearby at night. What can I do?
Sunny, owner notes“I wish my dog lived as long as I do.”Updated
I'm an owner, not a vet. This is not veterinary advice, so check anything medical with your own vet.
Short answer
Make a plan now, while your dog is well, for something going wrong at night with no clinic open nearby. Ask your vet who to call after hours, and find the nearest clinic that is open late. Save the numbers and the route. If your dog is weak, collapses or has a seizure, call and set off straight away.
What to know at home
Many areas don't have a clinic open all night close by, so a plan made in advance matters more than searching on the night. Some vets take calls after hours or can point you to a clinic that does. Knowing who can drive, and how you'll lift a big dog, saves time.
What to write down
- Your vet's after-hours number and the nearest late clinic
- Who can drive, and how long the journey takes
- A short summary of his diabetes and insulin to read out on the phone
What to ask next
Ask your vet what you should do at home on the way, and when it's safe to wait for morning. Keep the plan with his low-sugar card. Don't wait for a reply to a message if he is weak, collapsed or fitting. Call and go.
