Question
Our vet is far away. Can check-ins happen by phone or video?
Sunny, owner notes“I wish my dog lived as long as I do.”Updated
I'm an owner, not a vet. This is not veterinary advice, so check anything medical with your own vet.
Short answer
When the clinic is a long drive away, every visit takes planning. Many vets can help between visits by phone or message, using your notes, but they still need to examine your dog in person. Ask how often they want to see him and what they can review remotely. If your dog is weak, vomiting or won't eat, call and get him seen.
What to know at home
Clear notes make remote help much more useful. Some vets are happy to look at a home curve or a week of notes sent ahead. A nearer clinic can sometimes handle urgent problems and share results with your main vet.
What to write down
- Meals, injection times and how he seemed each day
- Any readings your vet asked for, with times
- Questions to send before the call
What to ask next
Ask your vet how to send notes, who replies, and how quickly. Agree which nearby clinic to use in an emergency, and ask both clinics to share records. Never change his treatment on the strength of a message alone. Wait for your vet's clear answer.
