Question
My diabetic dog's behaviour has changed. Is it the diabetes?
Sunny, owner notes“I wish my dog lived as long as I do.”Updated
I'm an owner, not a vet. This is not veterinary advice, so check anything medical with your own vet.
Short answer
Sometimes, but a sudden change can also mean low blood sugar, pain or another illness. Strange behaviour, weakness or unusual sleepiness can all be signs of a low. Call your vet and tell them when it started and what you're seeing. If he is confused, wobbly, has collapsed or is having a seizure, get urgent help now.
What to know at home
Describe what he's actually doing rather than calling it naughty or anxious. A dog who suddenly hides, snaps or can't settle may be telling you something is wrong. Don't punish him or force him to be handled while you wait for advice.
What to write down
- What changed and how quickly
- Food, treatment and activity beforehand
- Whether your dog responds normally to you
What to ask next
Ask whether he needs to be seen now and what you can safely keep an eye on while you sort out getting him there. Take a short video only if it doesn't hold up help or put anyone at risk.
