Question

Skin infections, hair loss or ear yeast: is diabetes involved?

Sunny, owner notes“I wish my dog lived as long as I do.”Updated

I'm an owner, not a vet. This is not veterinary advice, so check anything medical with your own vet.

Short answer

Itchy skin, bald patches or a smelly ear can make your dog miserable, and you may wonder if diabetes is to blame. Diabetic dogs can get infections, but the problem still needs to be looked at properly. It doesn't automatically mean his diabetes is out of control. Tell your vet about the skin and his diabetes together, and don't use old antibiotics or ear drops.

What to know at home

Hair loss and skin changes can also come from other hormone problems. The vet may need to see him and take a sample, because a photo isn't enough to tell what's going on.

What to write down

  • Where the problem began and how it spread
  • Itch, smell, discharge or pain
  • Medicines, appetite and thirst changes

What to ask next

Ask whether he needs tests for infection or something else, and how the treatment fits with his diabetes care. Sore ears and sore skin hurt, so get them treated rather than waiting.
