Question
Are allergy medicines like Apoquel safe for a diabetic dog?
Sunny, owner notes“I wish my dog lived as long as I do.”Updated
I'm an owner, not a vet. This is not veterinary advice, so check anything medical with your own vet.
Short answer
Whether an allergy medicine is okay for a diabetic dog depends on the exact medicine, why he needs it, and what else he's on. Tell the vet who prescribes it that he has diabetes, and ask them to check everything he takes. Don't use another dog's prescription or stop a medicine without asking. If the itching keeps him up at night, say so.
What to know at home
Itching needs treating, but it also helps to know why it's happening. Ask whether the vet is checking for infection, allergy or something else, and how they'll know the treatment is working. Mention shampoos, creams and supplements too.
What to write down
- Product name and why it was prescribed
- Other medicines and skin symptoms
- Recent appetite, thirst or energy changes
What to ask next
Ask what change you should see and which signs mean you should call. For questions about the exact medicine, ask your vet or the pharmacist who supplied it.
