Question

My diabetic dog also has an underactive thyroid.

Sunny, owner notes“I wish my dog lived as long as I do.”Updated

I'm an owner, not a vet. This is not veterinary advice, so check anything medical with your own vet.

Short answer

Having two conditions to manage can feel like a lot, but they're handled together, with one plan. Some thyroid signs overlap with other illnesses, so ask how it was confirmed and how the vet will check the treatment is working. Give them his full medicine list and your daily notes. Never change either treatment without talking to your vet first.

What to know at home

Thyroid results have to be read with the whole dog in mind. Weight gain, a dull coat or tiredness on their own don't prove it's the thyroid. If he's being treated for something else, ask whether that changes how the tests are read.

What to write down

  • Thyroid results and treatment history
  • Weight, coat, energy and appetite changes
  • All medicines and monitoring records

What to ask next

Ask who is in charge of follow-up and what change you should see. If he suddenly becomes very weak or unusually sleepy, call the vet. Don't put it down to the thyroid and wait for the next check-up.
