Question

Can a diabetic dog go into remission or come off insulin?

Sunny, owner notes“I wish my dog lived as long as I do.”Updated

I'm an owner, not a vet. This is not veterinary advice, so check anything medical with your own vet.

Short answer

Most diabetic dogs need insulin for life. Remission is more common in cats than dogs. Now and then, treating another problem changes things, and only your vet can judge that. A better appetite or a lower reading doesn't mean you can stop insulin. If readings drop or he seems weak, call your vet right away.

WhatsApp

I never give insulin amounts here. Yours comes from your vet's written plan.

What to know at home

It's natural to hope a new food or a good week means the diabetes has gone. Tell your vet about the improvement, but remember the insulin may be the reason he's doing better.

What to write down

  • Changes in thirst, appetite and weight
  • Readings requested by the clinic
  • Any treatment of another illness or hormonal condition

What to ask next

Ask whether the cause of his diabetes changes the long-term picture. If the readings drop or he seems weak, call the vet straight away. Don't change the plan at home.
