Question
Can diabetes be managed without insulin, with pills, diet or natural remedies?
Sunny, owner notes“I wish my dog lived as long as I do.”Updated
I'm an owner, not a vet. This is not veterinary advice, so check anything medical with your own vet.
Short answer
No. Food changes and supplements can't replace insulin for a diabetic dog. Remedies made for people or cats may not work for dogs. If the routine feels impossible, tell your vet honestly so they can help with the real problem. Never stop insulin to test a product. If your dog is vomiting, not eating or very weak, get urgent vet care.
I never give insulin amounts here. Yours comes from your vet's written plan.
What to know at home
A natural cure sounds very tempting when you're exhausted. Show the label to your vet before you use anything. Don't stop the insulin to see if a product works.
What to write down
- What makes treatment difficult
- Any products you are considering
- Appetite, thirst, weight and energy changes
What to ask next
Ask the vet to show you the injection again, train someone else in the family, or make the routine easier to manage. If your dog is vomiting, not eating or very weak, get urgent vet care. That is not the time to try an alternative.
