Question

Weak back legs or neuropathy: is it the diabetes?

Sunny, owner notes“I wish my dog lived as long as I do.”Updated

I'm an owner, not a vet. This is not veterinary advice, so check anything medical with your own vet.

Short answer

Weak back legs aren't always caused by diabetes. There are many possible reasons, and sudden weakness can be an emergency, especially after an insulin injection. Ask your vet to examine him before you start any supplement or exercise plan. If he's wobbly, trembling, can't stand or has a seizure, call your vet or an emergency clinic now.

WhatsApp

I never give insulin amounts here. Yours comes from your vet's written plan.

What to know at home

You'll see nerve damage (neuropathy) mentioned a lot in diabetes groups, but it's more common in diabetic cats than dogs. If your dog struggles to get up or walk, the vet still needs to check him properly, including for pain and other illness.

What to write down

  • Sudden or gradual onset
  • Whether one or both sides seem affected
  • Relation to meals, activity and treatment times

What to ask next

Tell the vet exactly what his legs are doing and whether he seems in pain or confused. A short video can help, but only if it doesn't hold up getting help. Don't make a struggling dog walk just to film it.
