Question

Should I get a second opinion or change vets?

Sunny, owner notes“I wish my dog lived as long as I do.”Updated

I'm an owner, not a vet. This is not veterinary advice, so check anything medical with your own vet.

Short answer

It's okay to want another vet's view, and you don't have to prove your current vet is wrong to ask for one. Take the records, the current plan and the questions you still have. Keep following one plan while the two vets talk to each other. If your dog is unwell right now, get urgent care first rather than waiting for the vet you'd prefer.

What to know at home

Hearing it explained fresh can help when you feel nobody is listening, or the care is hard to manage. Tell the new clinic what you want: a one-off review, a referral, or to move your dog's care to them for good.

What to write down

  • Test results and discharge letters
  • A current medicine and food list
  • The decisions you want explained

What to ask next

Ask who you should call with urgent questions while the records are being moved. If the plan changes, ask for the new one in writing, and ask which of the old instructions it replaces.
