Question

How do I weigh a big dog at home?

Sunny, owner notes“I wish my dog lived as long as I do.”Updated

I'm an owner, not a vet. This is not veterinary advice, so check anything medical with your own vet.

Short answer

Weight is one of the clearest signs of how diabetes is going, and big dogs are hard to weigh at home. One simple way is to weigh yourself, then again holding him, if you can lift him safely. Otherwise, ask the clinic to weigh him when you pass. Use the same scale each time. If he's losing weight fast, tell your vet.

What to know at home

Most vets suggest weighing on the same scale once or twice a month and checking body shape too. Feeling his ribs and looking at his waist from above helps between weigh-ins. Your vet can show you what a healthy shape looks like for him.

What to write down

  • Date, weight and which scale you used
  • How his ribs and waist feel
  • Appetite and any change in food

What to ask next

Bring your weight notes to each check-up. Don't change how much he eats on your own because of one weigh-in. Ask your vet first. If weight loss comes with thirst, vomiting or tiredness, call sooner.
