Question

My dog lives outdoors or on the terrace. Does that matter now?

Sunny, owner notes“I wish my dog lived as long as I do.”Updated

I'm an owner, not a vet. This is not veterinary advice, so check anything medical with your own vet.

Short answer

Plenty of dogs spend most of their time outside or on a terrace. With diabetes, though, it's harder to notice changes in drinking, peeing or a low. Heat, rain and missed meals add risk too. Ask your vet whether he should spend more time indoors. If you find him weak, wobbly or not eating, call your vet right away.

What to know at home

Most vets prefer diabetic dogs to live indoors where possible, because a steady routine with fewer surprises makes diabetes easier to manage. Outside, it's also hard to stop him eating things he finds, or to keep his water clean and full.

What to write down

  • Where he spends the day and night
  • How much he seems to drink, if you can tell
  • Anything he may have eaten outside

What to ask next

Even bringing him indoors at night or in the hottest hours can help you watch him. Keep a big bowl of clean water in the shade. Check on him often, especially after insulin and walks.
