Question
What tests confirm diabetes, and what do the results mean?
Sunny, owner notes“I wish my dog lived as long as I do.”Updated
I'm an owner, not a vet. This is not veterinary advice, so check anything medical with your own vet.
Short answer
Your vet confirms diabetes with blood and urine tests, and one home reading isn't enough. They look at your dog and his history too. Other tests may check for illnesses that often come with it. Ask what each result shows and what still needs checking. If your dog is vomiting, weak or refusing food, call your vet now rather than waiting for results.
What to know at home
Glucose is the sugar in the blood, and sugar in the urine is another clue. The vet may also check blood chemistry, a urine sample and a blood test that shows the average over the last few weeks. A result marked high or low needs your vet to explain what it means for your dog.
What to write down
- Appetite, thirst, urination and weight changes
- Medicines and recent illnesses
- Copies of results with the laboratory ranges
What to ask next
Ask which results confirm the diabetes and which tests are looking for other problems. If your dog is vomiting, weak or refusing food, call the vet now. Don't wait for the results appointment.
