Question
Should my diabetic dog still be vaccinated?
Sunny, owner notes“I wish my dog lived as long as I do.”Updated
I'm an owner, not a vet. This is not veterinary advice, so check anything medical with your own vet.
Short answer
Most diabetic dogs still need their vaccines, so talk to your vet about what yours needs. They'll look at his health now, his past vaccines, how he lives and what's required locally. If he's unwell, off his food or his readings have been unsettled, tell the vet before the visit. Take his written plan along so they can see his daily routine.
What to know at home
Take his vaccine card rather than going from memory. Ask what each vaccine protects against and whether being unwell right now changes the timing. Another diabetic dog's vaccine schedule won't necessarily suit yours.
What to write down
- Previous vaccination records
- Travel, boarding and exposure plans
- Current illness and medicines
What to ask next
Ask for a written plan that fits your dog and the local rules. If his sugar changes around a vaccine, tell the vet, but don't assume the vaccine caused it.
