Question

My diabetic dog has kidney problems or protein in the urine.

Sunny, owner notes“I wish my dog lived as long as I do.”Updated

I'm an owner, not a vet. This is not veterinary advice, so check anything medical with your own vet.

Short answer

Protein in the urine or an odd kidney result doesn't automatically mean kidney failure. Diabetes, infections and other problems can all muddy the picture. Ask your vet what's confirmed and which tests need repeating. Plan food and treatment with your vet, and don't change the diet yourself. If he's vomiting, off his food or very weak, call your vet soon.

What to know at home

A second bad result can feel like everything has changed. Your vet can tell you whether the finding is sticking around, what the other tests show, and whether a specialist would help.

What to write down

  • Copies of blood and urine results
  • Drinking, appetite, weight and urination changes
  • All medicines and supplements

What to ask next

Ask how the kidney results change his food, his checks and his follow-ups. Call the vet soon if he's vomiting, off his food or very weak. Keep his water bowl full unless your vet tells you otherwise.
