Question
Do eye drops or supplements prevent cataracts?
Sunny, owner notes“I wish my dog lived as long as I do.”Updated
I'm an owner, not a vet. This is not veterinary advice, so check anything medical with your own vet.
Short answer
When you're scared of your dog losing his sight, any product that promises to help is tempting. Most vets wouldn't rely on an eye supplement or advertised drops to stop cataracts. Ask an eye vet whether the exact product has real evidence behind it. Some drops treat inflammation but don't clear a cataract. If an eye goes red or sore, get it seen soon.
What to know at home
Stopping a cataract, calming inflammation and removing a cataract are three different things. Ask which one a treatment is meant for and whether it has actually been shown to help. Never put human drops or old leftover drops in an eye the vet hasn't seen.
What to write down
- The exact product and ingredients
- Why it was prescribed or recommended
- Redness, pain or recent vision changes
What to ask next
Ask for a proper eye check, and a referral if needed, rather than a list of things to buy. An eye specialist can tell you what makes sense now, what isn't known yet, and which changes mean you should go back quickly.
