Question
Are roti, rice, curd, dal or eggs OK for a diabetic dog?
Sunny, owner notes“I wish my dog lived as long as I do.”Updated
I'm an owner, not a vet. This is not veterinary advice, so check anything medical with your own vet.
Short answer
If your dog has always eaten from the family kitchen, you'll want to know which foods are still okay. Roti, rice, curd, dal and eggs are ingredients. On their own they don't make a complete diet. Ask your vet or a vet nutritionist to look at the whole bowl, including how you cook it. He needs a balanced meal he'll eat reliably.
What to know at home
Plain dal and the dal from the family pot aren't the same food. Write down how it's made, including oil, salt and anything else that goes in, not just the name of the dish.
What to write down
- Everything that goes into the bowl
- How preparation changes between days
- Current food, appetite and other diagnoses
What to ask next
Ask for a complete plan you can repeat every day, with swaps for when something isn't available. No kitchen ingredient fixes his sugar, so be wary of anyone who says otherwise.
