Question
Is grain-free or low-carb food better for a diabetic dog?
Sunny, owner notes“I wish my dog lived as long as I do.”Updated
I'm an owner, not a vet. This is not veterinary advice, so check anything medical with your own vet.
Short answer
Grain-free and low-carb bags are often sold as a good fit for diabetic dogs. Most vets, though, care more about fibre and a steady routine than about cutting carbs. Try not to switch just to see what happens. If you've already changed, write down the date and both foods, and talk to your vet before you switch back, because that's another change too.
I never give insulin amounts here. Yours comes from your vet's written plan.
What you might notice at home
The bag says grain-free or low glycaemic, and it feels like the obvious choice for a diabetic dog. Some owners say his numbers settled. Others say they got worse, even on rich, meaty foods.
So owners are split, and what worked for one dog tells you very little about yours.
What to write down for the vet
- The old food and the new food, with dates.
- Why you switched, in one line.
- Stool, itch, weight, and appetite.
- Any readings you already took, labelled with the time.
What to take with you
Both bags if you still have them. Tell your vet what you were hoping the new food would fix. Fibre, weight and pancreatitis all need different answers.
